Great Grandfather Richard Sanderville
Abstract, oil panting of Blackfoot Indian Interpreter, Richard Sanderville. Blackfoot, ca. 1873-1951. Oil on panel 18" x 24". (See larger image below.)
"Richard Sanderville died in the Indian Hospital on the Blackfeet Reservation February 25, 1951, at the end of a long and very active life. His sign language studies alone might qualify him for consideration among twentieth century Indian intellectuals. But those of us who knew Dick Sanderville, as he was known to his many friends, also knew that his skill as a sign-talker was but one of his many accomplishments as a Blackfoot interpreter. We knew, also, that as a true interpreter he conveyed White men's ideas to Indians and Indian ones to Whites." - American Indian Intellectuals. John C. Ewers. Smithsonian Institute. 1976.
